Spring Weather Conditions Can Create Flood Risks

As the spring approaches, certain weather patterns can increase the chances of a flood in your area. To best prepare yourself, make sure you have the necessary flood insurance to protect against the threats that could damage your home or business.

  • Spring thaw: As the temperature begins to rise, melting snow and rain can create some flood issues during the spring thaw. While it may be warmer out, some land could still be too frozen to allow the moisture to seep into the ground. As a result, the melted snow and rain can create overflow in streams, rivers and lakes, which could cause flooding.
  • Ice jams: In some areas of the country, the weather remains cold into the beginning of the spring. If this causes the surface of rivers to freeze, ice jams could become a flooding issue. As the weather warms, chunks of this ice could break off and become jammed at man-made or natural obstructions, which could create severe flooding in the area.
  • Heavy rains: The spring is notorious for heavy rains. These storms can cause cresting rivers, backed-up storm drains or saturated ground, all of which can increase the risk of flooding. In areas with levees and dams, heavy rains could create pressure and erosion over time, which could lead to these being overtopped and cause flooding.

What do you do if your area is experiencing a flood?
If your town is flooded as a result of one of these spring weather issues, you may find yourself in some danger. One of the most important things to do is to head for higher ground. Staying in areas that are subject to flooding could put you at risk.

Additionally, you'll want to avoid any areas that are already flooded, as trying to cross just six inches of moving water could potentially knock you off your feet and sweep you away.

Those who hop in their cars to get out of the area shouldn't drive through any flooded roadways. Doing so could put yourself in danger, as roadbeds could have been washed out under flood waters. Also, just two feet of moving water could possibly sweep an SUV off the road.

To prepare for the spring flooding season, you should make sure you are aware of all the risks and that your flood insurance policy protects your home and valuables.
