Winter Weather & Spring Thaw Bring Many Flood Risks

While many people equate flooding to rainy conditions, winter weather and spring thaw can also lead to many flood risks. That said, people should take the necessary steps to prepare their homes, which include ensuring they are protected by flood insurance, especially if they live in an area prone to this natural disaster.

According to FEMA, areas that receive a lot of snow can see flood risks increase when it begins to melt, while those who don't receive much precipitation could see flash floods once they are hit with a sudden rain or snow storm.

The Pacific Northwest is one region that could be affected, as the winter rainy season brings intense winter storms to the area. With recent wildfires leaving the ground charred and unable to absorb excess water, people living in this part of the country could see an increased risk of flooding and mudslides.

The Midwest and Northeast have seen heavy snowfall, ice jams, rapid snowmelt and intense rainstorms, all of which can lead to a higher chance of localized flooding.

"When it comes to reducing the vulnerability to natural disasters, the whole community has a role to play, and that includes individual citizens," said associate administrator for FEMA's federal insurance and mitigation administration. "One of the most critical ways residents can protect their homes and businesses from the severe weather that may cause flooding is to obtain flood insurance."

What should you do to prepare for a flood?
In addition to purchasing insurance, homeowners can take numerous steps to protect their properties from a flood.

  • Create a household inventory: In order to receive insurance money for any      possessions damaged in a flood, homeowners will need to have an inventory      of all valuable items. This could include major appliances and      electronics. The serial numbers and store receipts should be kept, so      people can prove how much they paid for each item.
  • Prepare the home: Another important step that homeowners need to take is to      prepare their homes. Anyone who lives in an area that is at risk of      flooding should always make sure their sump pump is working. Also,      clearing any debris from gutters could be beneficial. Oftentimes,      basements are the area that is most at risk, so people should inspect for      any cracks in the walls that could allow water to get in. People should      also ensure drainage goes away from their house.

The winter times when people's homes are most prone to flooding, so it is better to be safe than sorry and prepare.
