Stronger Hurricanes Predicted for 2013

As hurricane season approaches, businesses and homeowners might want to ensure they have flood insurance and review their policy, as experts are predicting stronger storms in 2013.

ImpactWeather projects between 16 and 20 named storms during the 2013 hurricane season, with seven to nine reaching hurricane strength. Last year, just one storm reached category three strength, but two to four could reach this level in 2013 and possibly cause significant destruction.

Chris Hebert, ImpactWeather's meteorologist said these projections are based on past-season averages, ocean temperature trends and the absence of an El Niño influence from the Pacific Ocean.

With the number of category three storms expected to increase, business and homeowners should begin preparation immediately.

"An increasing number of companies, after seeing the effects of hurricanes like Katrina, Ike and Sandy, are implementing strategies to aid them in making the best business decisions possible when confronted by weather-related risk," said Mark Chambers, President of ImpactWeather. "With even more severe hurricanes on the horizon for 2013, preparedness and planning should be of paramount importance."

Flooding can be extremely costly, as even just an inch of water can cause significant damage.  People should begin by reviewing their flood insurance policy or purchasing one if necessary to ensure they are financially protected for the upcoming hurricane season.
